Today’s Presentation: De-escalating Conflict and Communicating Under Stress

Communication challenges within a school community are inevitable — and communicating under stress is a critically important skill for everyone, particularly the school staff, teachers and administrators.

They set the expectations, model proper response and teach by their words and behavior. And they must remain effective and professional in all of their interactions — whether it is with students, teachers, parents and other school administrators and staff.

Today’s presentation by Kathy Mangold and Jill Weisensel offered a glimpse into the most effective de-escalatory strategies to use in conflict situations.

As promised, here are the 10 tips to help you maintain your “Showtime” presence:

—   Understand the difference between reasonable resistance and severe resistance.

—   Flexibility is strength. Rigidity is weakness.

—   Always treat others as you would want to be treated in identical circumstances.

—   Anticipate, don’t expect.

—   Use positive feedback when you least want to.

—   Never use the words that rise most readily to your lips.

—   The most dangerous weapon you have is your cocked tongue.

—   Never tell someone to “calm down!” Calm them down by your performance.

—   Remember that when your mouth opens, your ears close.

—   Bad words color good deeds negative.
